Director of Technology, Education & Development

Gary has been with the Gorilla Foundation for 19 years, initially serving as Director of Educational Technology, followed by an interim stint as Executive Director, and now refocusing on his passion for education — the Gorilla Foundaton's principle strategy for achieving conservation through communication.  The new "Koko App," which he is currently developing with with an experienced volunteer team, represents the culmination of decades of planning how to best share the lessons and joys of interspecies communication with the general public, as well as colleagues, peers and potentially all great apes in captivity.

Dr. Stanley's previous 2-decade career was as an aerospace engineer, developing simulation software and databases to facilitate,  automate and manage the design process — all skills which have proven useful in his current position.  He believes that Project Koko provides a unique key to achieving rapid and long-lasting conservation results for great apes — by integrating empathy, data and technology in one (hand-held) package, which is soon to be embodied by the new Koko App.
